A 4th engineer on ships is a rank of an engine officer in the engine department. 

To become a fourth engineer, one must hold all STCW required certificates to board a ship. The duties on a 4th engineer include on shipping companies: 

  • leading the oilers
  • managing engine room crew
  • standing watches in the engine department
  • keeping the plant in operation
  • sewage processing and treatment
  • electrical and general maintenance
  • fixing pumps
  • monitoring equipment
  • operation and maintenance 

The fourth engineer reports to the Third engineer, Second Engineer or Chief Engineer. Generally, the rank of 4th engineer is an entry level position for crew who have recently completed the Marine Engineering Technology (MET) or Mechanical Engineering License or the CEC Y4 certification.
