ABOUT THE ROLE

The Assistant Engineer is responsible for assisting the Chief Engineer in the maintenance, operation, and repair of all vessel electrical and mechanical systems onboard ships. Capable to work under pressure, deal with difficulties independently, and deal with changes in priorities that may occur suddenly.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Repair and Maintenance:

Under direct supervision of the Chief Engineer.

Performs routine to moderate difficult professional engineering maintenance tasks and keep records of work performed.

Assist with maintenance by offering technical advice and apply knowledge of mechanics, electricity, hydraulics, pneumatics, HVAC and plumbing.

Support engineering projects by applying engineering techniques; conducting inspections and preparing reports as needed.

Maintain essential communication with the engineering team and Captain of the vessel.

Help as needed with the hotel prevention maintenance programs.

Participates in yearly shipyards.

Assists Chief Engineer in all bunkering operations.

Administrative:

Efficiently operates onboard computer using standard or customized software applications.

Update vessel maintenance records for engineering work items.

Assists the Chief Engineer with inventories.

Safety and Security:

Follows company safety and pollution prevention policies and procedures and requests guidance when necessary.

Assists in the preparation of the vessel for all U.S. Coast Guard annual dry docks and other inspections.

Participates in shore side training as required by the company.

Familiar with the ISM Code and requirements.

Familiar with all duties under the company Safety Management System including Emergency Response activities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Working knowledge of diesel propulsion and electricity generation systems. Knowledge of support systems such as fuel centrifuges, air compressors, pumps, hydraulics, water makers, hotel systems, plumbing, refrigeration, heating, and air conditioning also preferred.

Computer experience: Excel spreadsheet experience, and Windows applications (including Word) is preferred.

Professional demeanor; ability to use appropriate levels of tact and courtesy.

Must be a self-starter, able to handle multiple tasks and work with little supervision and work in small spaces.

Crisis management: Work well under pressure, act quickly and decisively using sound judgment.

Communication Skills: The Assistant Engineer will have some guest contact and must be professional and have the ability to present information and respond to questions. Ability to read, analyze and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Must be able to provide concise and clear reports as required.

Licenses, Certificates, Registrations:

QMED required.

Current First Aid/CPR certification required.

Valid TWIC card required.

Valid US Passport required.

STCW Basic Safety Training required.

STCW Crowd Management preferred.

Fire Fighting Certification preferred.

WORK SCHEDULE:

The Assistant Engineer works 12 hours per day: approximately 7 weeks on, 7 weeks off rotational schedule.
